Teaser Tuesdays: The Selected Works of T.S. Spivet

10 May

The Should Be Reading blog features a Teaser Tuesday prompt each week in which people give sneak-peeks of books they are currently reading. I feel like I’ve blogged about The Grapes of Wrath a lot lately, so I thought I’d share an excerpt from a book I plan to read next. After finishing The Grapes of Wrath, I plan to read The Selected Works of T.S. Spivet by Reif Larson. The layout of this novel caught my attention while I was searching for a new book recently. The main character is a “twelve-year-old genius cartographer”, so the text is peppered with maps and diagrams. The layout of this book “feels” inviting, and I’m really looking forward to reading it. Here’s an excerpt from a page chosen at random: “I ran around the vehicle, looking for something, anything: a sidecar, a canoe, a tent – any kind of recreational accessory that could temporarily conceal me from the rail yard bull with his stick and his monocle and his nose for blood. Nothing. Didn’t these things come loaded with special options?” (page 117)
